Jane Gross, an author and retired correspondent with the NY Times shared this recently:
In 1960 there were 7 million billion living alone, representing 13% of the population. Now there are 31.2 million, a jump of 350%. For those 65 and older, 45% live alone - and this will have significant repercussions for both retirement and long-term care.
From my experience I see the challenges folks face. Waking up alone, not having anyone to share the morning with - things I take for granted. But then some will need help getting ready, or to prepare breakfast, or getting a ride to the doctor. The economics can be dire as well, as these folks generally live on one income, one Social Security check.
